Dacha means a house where you take a rest in summer. They're not cottages, they're much simplier. In other words, they're not built for permanent living. They are used as resthouses in summer.
Majority of Russian families have dachas. That's where they spend summer relaxing and gardening.
Some dachas are near the river so many can be seen fishing.
The styles of dachas vary according to the type they were built.
Originally, dachas were given free during Soviet Union times. The streets are named according to what group of people are living in the area. For example, musicians street, artists, writers etc. If some worked in a factory then the street would be named after the factory's name.
Some dachas have very beautiful botanical garden while others are more abundant in vegetables and berries.
While others are kept wild...
or abandoned.
The best thing I like about dacha is that it's in the heart of nature, away from the city. When you're in dacha, you don't have the complete comfort and convenience as you have in the city where you live. But that's what makes it exciting! For one season, you'll be totally living a different kinda life. Water and electricity are not a problem though as there is a normal supply.
Also, fruits and berries grow in the yard even without planting them, they're wild, without any fertilizers except minerals from the soil.
Dacha is like another world in Russia, it's hot and green. But once fall comes, everybody goes back to the city and again lives the normal colder life. :)
Hello, the dachas seem to be a nice little retreat for a vacation. I like the pretty colors, gardens and berry plants. Thanks for sharing, wonderful post and images. Enjoy your week!
ReplyDeleteAmazing...they gave them away? Would everyone get one or just the favored few?
ReplyDeleteLooks relaxing. Love the beautiful colors!
I understand the difference, but the cuteness factor is the same!! It's a wonderful idea!!
ReplyDeleteHow I would love to visit a dacha. The ones you show are absolutely wonderful to look at.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea! They are really cute!
ReplyDeleteSounds so much like our tradition of having a summer 'cottage' - at least some of which are still pretty simple small places. Not much gardening though, more fishing.
ReplyDeleteWow, Dachas are really like another world! I never knew such resthouse existed and majority of Russians has it. They look very pretty and perfect place to relax for vacation!
ReplyDeleteVery cute, cozy little cottages. Here in the US we'd call them cabins.
ReplyDeleteThey look lovely ! What a great idea ! I know that in Eastern Germany some high positioned government employees had Datchas too and after the wall went down, Western people were eager to buy one !
ReplyDeleteVery interesting post and lovely images!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy the beautiful summer days! :)
Beautiful and interesting post, lovely little homes !
ReplyDeleteDachas are like what cottages used to be here in Canada. I think they are way more fun than another fancy home to take of like so many North Americans do now.
ReplyDeleteThey all look so colourful and welcoming - and a great place to while away the summer :) #ourworldtuesdays
ReplyDeleteI love the gardens. What a wonderful idea. They are cute, little houses and look perfect for a place to getaway and rest.
ReplyDeleteThe things I learn on the internet! How nice to have such a place to get away from the city.
ReplyDeleteI think your dachas look very much as how I see "cottages" at my lake -- summer spots, not designed to live in year round. These look far more elaborate and beautiful than those in my area! I love the gardens! So beautiful -- I can see what a restful sanctuary it would be!
ReplyDeletebeautiful getaways. thanks for stopping by today. hope you are well!
ReplyDeletethank you for all those explanations and wonderful pictures
