After the last fall of snow, there was finally spring cleaning. SUBOTNIK means Saturday cleaning day in spring. It is one the days I always look forward to in spring. For me, it's a real sign that winter's over.
This is an ad posted at our flat's main entrance. It is made like in Soviet era's style. It's fun though, especially for foreigners like me who finds it interesting to see soviet elements in the new Russia.
The cleaning starts in the residential yards where pensioners are the most active participants.
Tools are provided for the volunteers.
People are seen cleaning the parks, students-the school yard. For students, it is simply a part of thrir students' life. They say that their teacher "volunteered" them :) Some of course were still able to run away but those who join get extra points. Fair enough.
I like that even kids are taking part in this. At young age they learn responsibility, community service and taking care of nature.
Workers worked harder on this day washing up the streets and repainting fences. Some companies brought their employees to join the spring cleaning.
Like I said, I was always looking forward to this but I never had the chance to participate and help. Saturday is an important day at work. I saw many people in tha parks and on the road that day but I wasn't able to make pictures of them. This ones I've posted are from "Moscow Times"

That is a great idea!! Many hands make light work.
ReplyDeleteThere is a spring cleaning weekend every spring here in my little town. After spiffing up my yard I open my windows wide and let the fresh air into the house.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great idea! I love that students participate. Good lessons for them.
ReplyDeleteI love this idea! Everyone working together makes it more enjoyable.
ReplyDeleteNice shots and a great sense of community. We do this here in Sweden too - our street is a kind of community and we clean twice a year together.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful idea! People (especially children) who are involved in cleaning up litter, etc. and far more likely to use a trash can rather than drop their drink cup or candy wrapper on the ground.
ReplyDeleteI've been working on the yard and now have to return to the basement to do more purging and cleaning. Looks like you all are very busy!
ReplyDeleteAnd thanks so much for the lovely comments on Marmelade Gypsy. I love it when you stop by!
What a great idea!
ReplyDeleteNice shots.

It's great people get together and do spring cleaning for the community.
ReplyDeleteWe had similar program where I lived in Japan, too.
Community efforts seem like a good thing! And getting all spruced up this time of year is definitely good. Kids in high school here have to do some community service to graduate . I'm sure some of them would say 'my teacher volunteered me' too))
ReplyDeleteGood way to meet people in a healthy way. I like seeing the children chipping in too.
ReplyDeleteI like that everyone, young and old, come together to improve the community. :-)
