It's time for me to take you out on the streets. This is the frozen Kaban lake. Located at the heart of the city, near Kamal theatre. On the left bank is the Catholic church, a synagogue and two Orthodox churches. The Millennium park and Basket Hall are also on that side together with many commercial buildings.
On the opposite bank is the old Tatar settlement. Tatar is the nationality of people who are from the Republic of Tatarstan, which capital city is Kazan where I am residing now. The people have Russian passports but they are considered ethnical Tatars. Mosques can be found in the area and lots of old traditional houses from the 18th-19th centuries. I'll have to bring you there some other time. I've been there once in summer and I must say it has a very quaint atmosphere, very opposite to what the left bank has.
I am standing at the theatre area facing the lake. The lake has a huge fountain in summer.
Here, if front the theater is a small square with fountains of different sizes. In winter, this serves as one of the dumping sites for snow from the main streets. Across, is the Pedagogical university.
This is the Millennium park on the left bank. That kinda round building you can see is the basket hall (basketball stadium).
The park, however, doesn't really serve as a park in winter. You can't sit anywhere, besides, no one wanting to sit in the cold. :)
The dirty snow on the sidewalks. It is ice under the snow so the street cleaners have to put ground on them so at least people can walk with traction. In the end, it becomes brown or even black snow which you carry with you until you wash your shoes.
Next time we'll visit other parts of the city.

It is a snowy winter wonderland there! Neat shot of the frozen lake! Thanks for sharing your visit.. Have a happy week!
ReplyDeleteHow interesting to see your part of the world. The snow looks so pristine and white at the moment.
ReplyDeleteThe lake is frozen over but no one clears it for skating. Maybe you get more snow there than we get in Canada making it difficult to clear the ice? I know a LOT about dirty shoes and boots too. :)
ReplyDeletebrrrrr, oh goodness, that's a lot of snow...your images are beautiful!!
ReplyDeletelots of snow! yes, i remember snow plows having to pile up snow as they cleared it. i'm sure that area has plenty!
ReplyDeleteWonderful wintry shots of Russia ~

artmusedog and carol
What a lot of snow! I recall such scenes from my childhood in Chicago, but nowdays I just want to see photos :)
ReplyDeleteThat is beautiful with the snow and the sunshine, but it does look cold! We can get serious snow where I live but it also gets warm sometimes in the winter.
ReplyDeleteGreat photos! It looks so cold in the photos with the benches. It sounds like quite a mess to walk in that with the ground on top of the snow.
ReplyDeleteThe cold scenery is so beautiful. I am anxious to see what the area looks like in warmer weather too.
ReplyDeleteSnowed in and plowed over!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, that's a lot of snow. When do you thaw?
ReplyDeleteUsually in March, last year it was only in April.
DeleteSnowy and gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed looking around at your blog. Where other people live is fascinating to me. So different from here! I'm signing up to follow you :)

ReplyDeleteDearest Mari; Wow,How beautiful and wish to see these icy scene, which I've never experienced. But I can see the Millennium park doesn't really serve as a park in winter... Stay warm, Dear friend in Russia and will be more faithful friend♡♡♡
ReplyDeleteSending Lots of Love and Hugs from Japan to my Dear friend, xoxo Miyako*
Looks like real winter there!
ReplyDeleteOh my that is a LOT of snow and just looking at the photos gave me shivers, Mari. I was wondering if people do just walk around in the area as you were doing since it looked like there were not any others around.
ReplyDeleteYes, people do walk around, not maybe on the lake but onthe place where I was standing, it's close to the main street. That woman down there was in fact with a kid, they've come to play. I usually wait for prople to go before taking a picture to have a full view.
